Live Microphone Diagnostic Lab

Read the output latency your browser reports for this device. Bluetooth typically adds the most.

Understanding Audio Latency

This page reports the browser's estimate of its audio output buffering and device path. It does not measure microphone input, network delay, Bluetooth codec delay end to end, or a full recording round trip.

  • Below 15 ms: Imperceptible. Ideal for recording while listening back in real time, and for gaming.
  • 15 ms to 45 ms: Standard for USB audio devices and built-in laptop hardware. A slight flam is audible if you listen to yourself live.
  • 45 ms to 100 ms: Increasingly obvious. Fine for playback and calls, awkward for anything you have to play or speak in time with.
  • 100 ms to 300 ms+: Typical for Bluetooth wireless codecs (SBC/AAC). Unsuitable for real-time monitoring.

What this browser latency result includes

The reported value describes output buffering known to the browser. It may not include every delay introduced by Bluetooth transmission, a call server, a recording app, effects processing, or the microphone path. That makes the result best for comparing browsers and output devices on the same computer, not for claiming an exact end-to-end delay.

How to reduce microphone or Bluetooth delay

For live monitoring, use wired headphones or an audio interface with direct monitoring. Close applications that are also using the microphone, disable unnecessary audio effects, and test a different browser. Bluetooth delay is often part of the wireless codec and device buffer, so reconnecting can help a temporary fault but cannot remove the normal transport delay. See the Bluetooth audio delay guide for a focused checklist.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

What causes microphone latency in web browsers?

Audio latency consists of hardware buffer processing, operating system audio stacks, and browser Web Audio buffers. Wired USB and 3.5mm microphones typically have 10–30 ms of roundtrip latency, whereas Bluetooth devices often introduce 150–250 ms of buffer delay.

Can I use Bluetooth headphones for live microphone monitoring?

Bluetooth audio standards (such as SBC or AAC) do not provide low enough latency for live microphone monitoring. Speaking while monitoring over Bluetooth will cause speech jamming and disorient your cadence. Use a wired connection for live monitoring.

How do I lower microphone input delay on Windows 11?

Disable audio enhancements under Windows Sound Properties, ensure exclusive mode is enabled for low-latency apps, and switch to official manufacturer drivers (such as Realtek or Focusrite ASIO) instead of generic Windows USB drivers.
